Hannover Re was established in 1966 under the name "Aktiengesellschaft für Transport- und Rückversicherung". The gross written premium has since grown from EUR 0.05 million to around EUR 12 billion in 2011. The company transacts non-life reinsurance since 1966. Life and health reinsurance is a strategic growth segment since 1990.
The principal shareholder is HDI Haftpflichtverband der Deutschen Industrie V.a.G., which holds 50.2% of Hannover Re's shares via Talanx AG. The Initial Public Offering took place on 30 November 1994, a Second Public Offering on 12 June 2003.
The company's overarching objective is to expand its position on the international reinsurance markets as a major reinsurance group of above-average profitability with an optimally diversified portfolio.
