Job Profile: North America

"After completing my military service I knew that I wanted to go to university. So I studied business science for four years in Cologne, with a concentration on insurance business administration. During my degree I spent six months at the University of Exeter in the UK. Here I was able to gain a deeper understanding of economics and business administration and at the same time improve my English skills.

During the university holidays I completed an apprenticeship with an insurance company and subsequently helped out there on a casual basis. With this practical experience and the theoretical knowledge acquired during my studies, it made sense to look for a career with an insurer or reinsurer. Hannover Re attracted me because of its location and the international environment in which it operates. On the basis of a speculative application it became clear that I was an interesting potential employee for the company with my mix of solidly grounded prior expertise in the insurance sector and English skills.

I began work in the North America Regional Division, and my academic studies provided a good professional foundation. I learnt the tricks of the trade "on the job" from my colleagues. I was able to spend several periods of time with our international partners in order to gain better insights into the local markets. Thus, for example, I spent a month in the USA and an apprenticeship of several weeks' duration with a London broker.
