Job Profile: Division Marine, Aviation, UK/Ireland
"After graduating in political economy I went to Spain for a year to get to know the country, its people and language. On my return I happened to come across an advertisement from Hannover Re for an internationally oriented economist.
My application was accepted and due to my knowledge of Spanish I started work in the regional division covering Romance-speaking markets, serving as an underwriter for Latin America and Spain. I built up my specialist insurance knowledge "on the job" and in reinsurance courses. I also had the opportunity to get to know a Spanish insurer through an on-the-spot visit.
At a later stage I attended management seminars in addition to the specialist courses. After gaining several years of professional experience I moved over to the Division Marine, Aviation, UK/Ireland and was promoted to Section Manager. I am currently a Departmental Manager.
Throughout my career I have used my language skills. I can also speak English now to a sound negotiating level, an ability that I use on an almost daily basis. I similarly benefit from a good grasp of technical issues. I am responsible for risk assessment, including the underwriting of large individual risks in aviation and shipping business. A sound understanding of technical considerations makes it easier to appropriately assess these contracts.
