Work-Life Balance –  Reconciling work and family life

By way of numerous measures which are either planned or have already been implemented, we strive to create ideal underlying conditions to enable our employees to harmonise work and family commitments. In the context of our flexible work schedules scheme and in addition to different part-time arrangements, this is also facilitated by the possibility of teleworking.
Alternate teleworking: providing employees with flexible work at home schedules.
Working partly from home and partly at the Hannover Re office: alternate teleworking has proved valuable in different pilot schemes, and it is increasingly popular with many members of our staff.
Corporate day care centre for infants, toddlers and young children  On the grounds of its administrative building, Hannover Re is planning to build an inhouse day care centre for looking after very young children. Hannover Re will bear the costs for putting up the building and maintaining it. A parent initiative made up of members of our staff will manage the day care centre.

Ecoprofit Hannover 2007 – We stand up for the environment

Last year Hannover Re joined the Ecoprofit programme. With the assistance of competent external support from the ECOPROFIT programme which was developed 15 years ago, Hannover Re has been working on coming up with practical measures for realising savings primarily in the fields of energy, water / waste water and waste / emissions but also with regard to raw materials and supplies. This is our contribution to protecting our environment.

Review/Outlook

  • Apprentices/Career Starters

Our apprentices successfully completed their education as Bachelors of Business Administration (BBA) with a professional field in insurance. We are proud to announce that our 2004-2007 class of BBAs with an insurance major obtained excellent results and would like to congratulate them on their success. The four graduates are now taking up fresh challenges within the company.

Our current training programme: In cooperation with the University of Applied Sciences in Hannover (FHDW), each year we train high school graduates so that they may obtain their bachelor’s degree with a major in insurance. As of Fall 2008, six apprentices will be able to participate in the training programme each year. The training is a skilful mix of theory and practice during which the apprentices get to know insurance and reinsurance business from the bottom up. Thanks to this mix of theory and practice, our apprentices are ideally prepared for all tasks and responsibilities awaiting them in the insurance industry.

Expanding our range of qualified jobs: For the first time in Fall 2008, we will offer an apprenticeship place as part of the integrated degree programme which will enable apprentices to obtain a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Informatics,

In addition to this, as of Summer 2008 we are also planning to offer an apprenticeship place for a cook-to-be.

  • Management Trainees

All year round, we offer university graduates an entry into the working world by way of participating in our management trainee programme. Our management trainees complete an 18-month programme for young executives through which they will get to know our company from many different perspectives. Depending on their strenghts and interests and as agreed on beforehand, the management trainees are assigned to different treaty, finance and accounting departments as well as management for periods of 6 to 12 weeks each. This enables them to actively participate in day-to-day business and familiarise themselves "on the job" with all sides of the reinsurance business. Together with their management trainee colleagues they handle small projects independently and develop and present solutions. The management trainees also receive targeted support in the form of selected training activities, specialist seminars and personal advice.

During the second half of the programme, we jointly map out the prospects for our management trainees’ future career within the organisation. The final months of the management trainee programme are spent at one of the company’s worldwide offices or with a business partner.

     Interns/Diploma Students

In 2007 we employed 20 interns, six of which subsequently wrote their diploma thesis under the supervision of the respective departments. We are pleased that this year, too, some of the interns joined our company after completing their internship with us.  Among others, topics of these practically oriented theses were: "Interdependencies between catastrophes (natural catastrophes and man-made disasters) and the capital market“, "Profitable product/market combinations for proprietary eCommerce solutions in the facultative reinsurance business using the example of Hannover Re”, "Analysis and design of data standards in facultative e-business". The latter thesis was awarded a prize.

Hannover Re reports highly satisfactory interim result

(excerpts from the Interim Report 3/2007)

Hannover, 8 November 2007: In its interim report published today Hannover Re expressed considerable satisfaction with the development of its business as at 30 September 2007. "With our result we have put in place a good platform for surpassing our originally envisaged profit target for the full financial year – namely a return on equity of at least 15 percent. Indeed, taking into account the non-recurring effect from the tax reform, the return on equity is set to reach at least 20 percent", Chief Executive Officer Wilhelm Zeller explained.
Although the hard market in non-life reinsurance has now passed its peak, rates are still commensurate with the risks after eight consecutive years of consistent price increases. Hannover Re thus continues to be able to generate profitable business. The development of life and health reinsurance was exceptionally favourable.
Based on the attractive market opportunities available in non-life reinsurance and life/health reinsurance and given the current state of the capital markets, Hannover Re is looking to a very good result for the full 2007 financial year.
