The environmental impacts of Hannover Re's business operations are comparatively slight. The company nevertheless takes its responsibility for the environment very seriously and is committed to minimising the adverse environmental impacts of its own business activities. With this in mind, the focus of these efforts is on reducing CO2 emissions. In 2016 Hannover Re conducted its business at the Hannover location with a net zero carbon footprint for the first time. Major steps towards achieving this goal were the implementation of the environmental management system and the changeover in the electricity supply to 100% renewables in 2012. Responsibility for environmental management at Hannover Re rests with the Executive Board as a whole, which coordinates on targets and measures with the Environmental Management Officer.
