Given that the trust of its stakeholders and an immaculate reputation are prerequisites for the success of the company, Hannover Re makes every effort to cultivate an active dialogue with customers and staff as well as with representatives of the capital market and society as a whole. Since 2011 the Group has reported annually on measures and achievements as a responsible enterprise in order to keep its stakeholders updated on developments in the field of sustainability. In this context Hannover Re is guided by the currently valid and internationally recognised standards of the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) and the transparency requirements of ESG rating agencies that focus on environmental, social and governance criteria (ESG criteria). With this in mind, the company pursues an ongoing dialogue with ESG rating agencies and regularly participates in various ratings as part of the annual rating processes.

Each year the rating agency ISS ESG (former oekom research AG) analyses the sustainability efforts of several thousand companies. The best performers in each industry are awarded so-called "Prime status", based on sector-specific criteria developed by ISS ESG especially for this purpose. Hannover Re was awarded "Prime status" for the first time in 2013.

In addition, the FTSE4Good Advisory Committee added Hannover Re to the worldwide FTSE4Good Index Series in 2014.

Hannover Re is also evaluated by the ESG rating agencies Robeco SAM, Sustainalytics, Vigeo Eiris, MSCI and Sustainability Intelligence.
