North America treaty reinsurance

Having started with our first acceptance in 1972, our involvement in the North American market has consistently grown through the cycles. While all underwriting is done directly out of Hannover, we maintain a local presence in the Chicago area. This is the base of our United States support marketing team and our experienced underwriting and claims audit group. Hannover Re has obtained accredited status in all 51 United States jurisdictions. Backed by the master trust fund our United States clients enjoy an unsurpassed level of security. Our Canadian business is written out of our office in Toronto.

Property

Managed by Andreas Steinweg the Property team boasts over USD 1.5bn in GWP and also has experts in the Entertainment and Terrorism markets.

Multiline

The department is focused on Standard Casualty, Workers Compensation, Multi Line as well as Personal & Light Umbrella business. Jan Zimmermann manages this team with a combined underwriting experience of almost 140 years.

Special Casualty

Thomas Windheim leads this very experienced team with six underwriters focused on Special Casualty Lines. This includes Reps and Warranties and Cyber.

North American Specialty

This department includes several dedicated teams with expertise in Digital Insurance Solutions, Caribbean and Medical Malpractice. Frank Rueckert heads this team and is also Chairman of the Branch Steering Board for the Canadian Branch in Toronto.

North American Catastrophe Reinsurance

The catastrophe excess of loss business from the North American market is written by our colleagues at Hannover Re (Bermuda) Ltd. Established in April 2001. Hannover Re (Bermuda) Ltd. is a key strategic subsidiary of Hannover Re and the provider of the global catastrophe excess of loss reinsurance capacity within the Hannover Re Group. Led by CEO Chantal Cardinez, Hannover Re (Bermuda) Ltd. reports directly to the Group’s Executive Board via Silke Sehm.

The US market remains the largest country by premium for Hannover Re

Hannover Re is a recognized reciprocal jurisdiction reinsurer

As of January 1, 2023, Hannover Re has been approved as reciprocal reinsurer in 51 US-states and thus, does not need to provide US-collateral for treaties written on or after January 1, 2023 (on a prospective basis). For pre-reciprocal status contracts in the US, Hannover Re maintains its certified and trusteed reinsurer status with collateral provided via multi-beneficiary trust funds.
