Mr. Baumgartl was a member of the Supervisory Board of Hannover Rück SE from 1993 to 2018, serving as its Chairman until 2009. From 1993 to 2006 he was Chairman of the Supervisory Board of E+S Rückversicherung AG and belonged to the company's Advisory Board until 2017.
In addition, Mr. Baumgartl served as Chairman of the Board of Management of HDI V.a.G from 1993 to 2006 and Chief Executive Officer of Talanx AG from 2000 to 2006. In 2006 Mr. Baumgartl became Chairman of the Supervisory Boards of HDI V.a.G. and Talanx AG until stepping down in 2018.
Mr. Baumgartl was bold and far-sighted in the close support that he gave to Hannover Re and E+S Rückversicherung for the growth and development of their business. Hannover Re's initial public offering was a major milestone in this regard.
Mr. Baumgartl was a highly influential figure. Long-term and forward-looking actions, the courage to take on challenging risks, creativity combined with robust assertiveness, as well as a keen intellect coupled with a very straightforward and human manner – these were the qualities that set him apart. He will be greatly missed. Our deepest sympathies go out to his wife and family.
