Background

Insurers face persistent challenges to digital growth due to legacy administration system limitations, compliance overhead, and fragmented tooling.

Eeli.io addresses these through an innovation ecosystem that combines a design‑first approach with an industrialised delivery platform. This pairing combines product incubation, market expansion, and platform modernisation while maintaining governance and operational discipline.

Description of solution

Due to persistent barriers to digitalisation, Hannover Re South Africa partnered with Different Technology to industrialise end‑to‑end digital life insurance delivery.

In 2019, Hannover Re South Africa collaborated to evolve its in-house technology into a platform‑as‑a‑service solution. This solution is anchored by Hannover Re’s automated underwriting rules, risk‑pricing expertise, and governance frameworks, so clients can design, launch, and operate modern life products with speed and control.

With this solution, insurers are offered a governed path from concept to market that combines Eeli.io’s Catalyst Design with delivery on the LifeStackTM insurance system. The Catalyst Design is a six to eight week process that is done in consultation with insurers to deliver a scoped and costed implementation blueprint.

Hannover Re contributes to this solution through underwriting automation considerations, risk pricing expertise, reinsurance know-how, and compliance support.

In practice, this solution includes:

  • Underwriting capabilities: Integration of underwriting rules and medical/lab flows for reflexive questioning and consistent decisions at point of sale.
  • Capacity and governance: Reinsurance, product/binder support, and regulatory guidance embedded in the delivery model.
  • Operational assurance: Formal SLA targets (99.3% uptime), tenant isolation (row‑level security or dedicated encrypted DBs), privacy by design.
  • Data and performance: Curated data insights and dashboards on sales, campaigns, collections, claims, persistency, exposure to inform pricing, retention, and portfolio steering.

Expected benefits

  • Cost efficiency: Build and run costs have proven to be a significant advantage of Eeli.io.
  • Operational leverage: Proven experience showing that digital operations with Eeli.io can scale without proportional increases in people costs.
  • Capital efficiency/time-to-market: The approach allows insurers to test propositions with dramatically less capital, while enabling seamless migration to more advanced structures when economics justify.
  • Reliability: The model targets high uptime with minimal disruption during business hours, supporting stable sales and servicing operations.
